Big coastal storm buffets Cape Henlopen and Delaware Bay communities

The recent coastal storm arrived unusually late in the season, and was quite intense. The rare spring nor'easter brought flooding in the town of Bethany (upper photo) and elsewhere as it buffeted Delaware's coast. The adjacent photo shows the bulwark effects of protective dunes on Bethany Beach, and Cape Henlopen State Park, in holding back the storm surge and wave actions.

While the dunes took a hit from the big storm, they nevertheless proved effective in limiting storm damage along the oceanfront. Delaware Bay communities in all three counties experienced extensive flooding. Much of Broadkill Beach, bottom left photo, was under water and another structure along a Delaware beach was taken off its pilings out to sea. More photos.

The sands of time ... and place and space South Bethany Beach during nourishment and storm damage reduction project 2008

– that's in nearly 3.8 million cubic yards of sand that have been pumped ashore for the Bethany-South Bethany Beach nourishment and storm damage reduction project. A recent beachgrass planting at South Bethany (photo) helps ensure that sand will stick around for a while. Photo: Lisa Pietro

Recent restoration of the North Herring Point groin at Cape Henlopen State Park
bolsters Delaware's shoreline by accumulating sand along the beachfront. Below: Volunteers
swarmed the dunes at the groin for the annual beachgrass planting. They neared the 5 million
mark in the number of beachgrass plugs planted over the last 20 years along Delaware's coast.
