Rare spring Nor'easter hammers at Delaware coast – protective dunes strike back

Monday’s storm that struck Delaware and swept the state's coastline arrived unusually late in the season, and struck with considerable intensity.

Flooding resulted in coastal communities throughout Delaware – in all three counties – and a research vessel affected by the storm (a crew member aboard the Russell W. Peterson died) ran aground on Bethany Beach.

The two bottom photographs show the effects of protective dunes in Bethany Beach, and Cape Henlopen State Park, in holding back the storm surge and wave actions.

While the dunes took a big hit from the rare spring Nor'easter, they proved effective in limiting storm damage along the ocean front.
